CityMD Case Study

CityMD achieves 80% participation rate for self check-in kiosk provided by VAULT and eClinicalWorks

One of the biggest misconceptions about self-service technology among healthcare executives is that if its deployed, patients won’t use it. In fact, quite the opposite is true. In the magazine July 2017 issue of CIO Applications, Ramu Kannon, CIO of New York City based urgent care facility, CityMD, spoke of the high participation rates the facility has seen with self check-in. With an initial target goal of 40% participation, CityMD surpassed the target in less than a month. Now with 164 kiosks across 73 Greater New York locations, CityMD is achieving an incredible 80% participation rate. Kannon noted that typical kiosk implementation wasn’t primary care centric. VAULT, in collaboration with eClinicalWorks developed a high-grade kiosk solution that included specific innovations like our Docuvue identity card scanning system. With Docuvue, patients can scan their identification cards and the information is automatically uploaded into the eClinicalWorks EMR for new patient registration or existing patient check-in.

The combination of the Docuvue system, alongside the patient’s ability to view and correct data errors, has led to a decrease in transcription, billing and claims submission errors. Through maintaining a patient-centric mentality, CityMD has improved their patient experience and workflow automation. Kannon reports the following self check-in benefits to CIO Applications Magazine.

- It takes less than a minute for a returning patient to check-in.
- It takes about two minutes for a new patient to register and check-in.
- All the data from the kiosks are automatically transferred into the EMR.
- Error rates and claims denials have reduced considerably.
- Paper consumption has gone down dramatically.
- Front desk personnel are relieved for other office duties.
